Dumfries man celebrates 100th birthday at Dumfries Bowling Club

A Dumfries bowler believes age is just a number – as he hit his local club to celebrate turning 100.

Blair Oldfield was thrilled on Thursday morning when he turned up at Dumfries Bowling Club as his pals helped him begin the birthday celebrations.

The former member of the Royal Navy is a well-known face at the club and was loving every minute of his big day as he enjoyed games of short mat bowling before a buffet.

Blair, who turns 100 on Sunday, said: “I think it’s just wonderful and I can’t believe they’ve gone to all this trouble for me. I didn’t expect this but I’m so pleased to see everyone.”

Born in Manchester, Blair was introduced to crown green bowls at the age of 14 by his uncle in what would start a fascinating life as he joined the Navy.

One of his first experiences at sea saw his first ship, the HMS Repulse, sunk by the Japanese in 1941 off the coast of Malaysia.

He later spent time on the Arctic waters working with Russian allies and in 2014 he was awarded the Ushakov medal for his courage and prowess in sea warfare.

Malcolm Ramage, club president, joked: “He’s a relatively new member to the club – he joined when he was 88.”

He added: “I love when Blair comes in to the club and he’s running up and down the grass singing away. It’s been a good day and he’s a real character.”
