Dumfries High School rebuild: council moves forward with ambitious plans for £48m project

The deadline has passed for the council to receive responses from organisations interested in building the replacement Dumfries High School.

And councillors on the education committee received an update on the second phase of the Dumfries Learning Town scheme this week, with part of the discussion surrounding the procurement process.

Members were told officers have progressed the work relating to the contract to revamp the school estate and the local authority has opted for a design and build contract for the new high school.

Three suitable “hub frameworks” have been asked to provide details on their intended approach to deliver the £48m project.

Those responses are not contractual proposals from the organisations but will give officers an idea of the options available to them to replace the school.

Responses were due last week before a full appraisal later this month, with officers providing a joint recommendation to members of the committee.

Councillors will be asked to agree with the decision at the December meeting.

The level of scrutiny in the procurement process comes after failings with the DG1 leisure centre and the North West Community Campus.

Education committee chairman Jeff Leaver said: “I’m pleased to see this report being presented to councillors and that phase two of Dumfries Learning Town is progressing well.

“I’m looking forward to hearing about the final procurement route for the replacement of Dumfries High School in December.”

Vice chairman Ros Surtees said: “I welcome this report and the updates on the Dumfries High School project.

“Every pupil deserves the best possible facilities throughout their education.”
