Dumfries High School is looking to set up a prom dress rental service.
An appeal has been made for old prom, bridesmaids and evening dresses to be donated to the school so that they can be used again by future students.
Pupils will be able to rent them, avoiding the usual cost and slowing down the fast fashion cycle to become more environmentally friendly and sustainable and combat the cost-of-living crisis.
Biology teacher, Debbie Downie, said: “Every year we are amazed at the array of beautiful dresses that our S6 girls wear to prom, and shocked when we discover the price they have paid for them and the realisation that many of these dresses will not be worn again and will lie in the back of the wardrobe.

“Clothing rental is becoming increasingly popular, not just to save money but also as a sustainable alternative to the disposable fashion cycle of buy, wear, replace.”
The school has already been inundated with second-hand dresses being handed in.
Mrs Downie added: “It is hoped we can collect enough dresses to be able to offer a pop-up shop each year to pupils to come in, try on and select a dress to hire for a small fee to cover cleaning costs.
“I appealed to staff in school and the wider community via Facebook and have been overwhelmed with the response. We have had a beautiful selection of dresses donated already, in all colours, styles and sizes. As a result of the pandemic, some have never been worn and still have labels attached.”
