Dumfries High School helps Charnwood Lodge Care Home with special Santa's sleigh

Dumfries High School has stepped up to help a local care home become a winter wonderland.

An appeal went out for any unused Christmas decorations to be given to Charnwood Lodge.

The request was made by Michaela Fleming, a carer at the home, who wanted to make the festive period special for residents.

Jenifer Grierson, the school’s library assistant, came up with a plan to make decorations and get pupils to write letters of hope to the residents there and other care homes across the region.

But things went a step further and the school was asked if it was possible to create a sleigh for residents to sit in for photos for Charnwood.

Technical teachers Ian Strachan and Lisa Dunbar got to work on the project with Mr Strachan even putting in extra hours over a weekend to paint the sleigh.

The sleigh was handed over after pupils put the finishing touches to it.

Jen Grierson said: “This project turned into an amazing opportunity that both Mr Strachan and Miss Dunbar had great joy in making.

“We hope that all at Charnwood enjoy “Ruff ‘n Reddy” for many years to come and thank you to Michaela.

“Our letters turned into Christmas cards that all of our S1 pupils wanted to make. Inside each card, they wrote messages of best wishes, love and hope after such a difficult and challenging year.

“As we had so many cards, we decided that all the care homes close to us and a couple further afield should also receive a gift from the S1 pupils at Dumfries High School.

“We hope that all the residents at Allenbank, Abbey Gardens, Lochduhar, Roseland House, Charnwood Lodge and Dryfemount in Lockerbie enjoy the Christmas greetings from them.”
