Dumfries Guid Nychburris celebrations set to return in 2022

Guid Nychburris is set to make a welcome return this summer after a two year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The festival association has announced it intends to host a full calendar to celebrate what will be the summer celebrations’ 90th anniversary.

A statement said: “The Guid Nychburris Festival Association along with Dumfries Cornets Club and The Queen of the South Association are pleased to announce that, with the easing of Covid-19 restrictions for us all, we fully intend hosting the 2022 Guid Nychburris Festival from Sunday June 12 to Saturday June 18.

“The usual rideouts and Guid Nychburris events, along with new and different activities to commemorate both 90 years since the first Guid Nychburris Festival in 1932 and the Queens Platinum Jubilee, are being planned by the committees and we sincerely hope that all events will be able to take place.

“We appreciate the support of various community groups, which are coming on board, to be part of Guid Nychburris 2022.”

The 2020 and 2021 events were scrapped due to Covid-19 and restrictions placed on indoor and outdoor gatherings.

However, with cases continuing to decline and restrictions lifting, there is hope for a new normal in the months ahead.

The association is planning for all eventualities and will release more details of proposed events soon.

It added: “Our committees will follow and adhere to Scottish Government guidance and advice from Dumfries and Galloway Council and Police Scotland to make sure our festival can take place in as safe an environment as we can make it.

“In the event of new guidance or restrictions being put in place, activities and festival events may have to be modified, curtailed or abandoned if required. However, we trust that won’t be the case.

“The committees of each organisation will continue to prepare and look forward, with enthusiasm, to welcome everyone back to Guid Nychburris 2022.”
