Dumfries firefighters pay tribute to Captain Tom Moore during Thursday night Clap for Our Carers

Dumfries firefighters’ white watch paid tribute to some very special people on Thursday night.

Led by watch commander John Harvey, who was playing the bagpipes, the firemen clapped for carers, NHS staff and other key workers.

Nearby residents and passers-by joined in the applause.

One local man said: “It was a wonderful gesture from the fire service and actually quite emotional.

“They also deserve credit for working during this crisis.”

Afterwards piper John, who was hoisted up in the air on a bucket of a fire engine, piped “Happy Birthday” to Captain Tom Moore.

The whole country celebrated with the war veteran on his 100th birthday last Thursday.

He raised a staggering £32 million for the NHS by walking laps of his garden.

Captain Tom, who was recently treated for a broken hip and skin cancer, initially aimed to raise £1,000 for NHS Charities Together and said he set about raising the money “for the sake of the nurses and the NHS we have because they are doing such a magnificent job”.

The charity’s chief executive Ellie Orton said: “What he has achieved will make a lasting difference.”

His big day was marked with an RAF flypast and birthday greetings from the Queen and Prime Minister.

Head of the Army, General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith called him “an inspirational role model”.

And he revealed that the pensioner was promoted to honorary colonel.

Sir Mark said Capt Tom’s “mature wisdom, no-nonsense attitude and humour in adversity make him an inspirational role model to generations”.
