Dumfries family honour key workers and hand out thank you boxes

A Dumfries family is spreading cheer and recognising the efforts of key workers during the coronavirus crisis.

Lee Vann-Wakelin has been honouring people in the region since the day before lockdown started on March 23.

He even started his own channel, LVW’s TV and posted images of as many key workers as possible.

Lee said: “The idea was for me to say thank you because some of us were safely at home, with our families, and others were working in horrendous situations.

“It was really a time when many were thinking so much about themselves, that I thought I’d go the other way.”

Lee has been thanking those who work in a variety of industries including supermarkets, pharmacies,
petrol stations, newsagents and bike shops as well as many others.

But in recent weeks he has stepped it up another level by creating “Happy Boxes” which contain sweeties, drinks, snacks and a thank you note from one if his five kids - Kennedie, Liberty, Miyah, Jayden and Lincoln.

At first he and his wife Louisa funded them but they have since received donations from friends in Texas and the Masonic Lodge in Sanquhar.

Lee added: “It’s totalled £730 in donations for us to make as many boxes as possible. We have sent out 268 so far, they cost £3.50 to fill, and have between 7 to 10 items in, plus a wee thank you drawing from one of my five kids.

“We have the funds to carry on indefinitely, and we don’t plan to stop doing this until March 19 next year, as we want the key workers to know that they won’t be forgotten.”
