Dumfries dog's remarkable recovery after losing leg in car accident

A miracle dog stunned vets by surviving life-threatening injuries.

Five-year-old Roxy was hit by a car recently and was given little chance of surviving through the night.

She had to have her leg amputated and also suffered a dislocated hip, fractured jaw and injured eye in the accident.

Owner Aine Dobson-Routledge told the Standard she was determined to try everything to save her beloved pooch after the rescue dog helped her overcome mental health issues two years ago.

Budding make-up artist Aine, 18, said: “The vets told us the situation and the options available to us. I couldn’t live with myself if there was a chance for her and we didn’t take it.

“I wanted to have more time with her. Roxy has been by my side when I needed her, so I had to be by her side when she needed me. I couldn’t even think about losing her.”

Aine set up a crowdfunding page to help towards the treatment for the pet and more than £1,200 was raised in three days. She said: “So many people have donated and it’s amazing how many people I see ask me about her and how she’s getting on.”

On Wednesday, Roxy returned home and is now adjusting to life back home in Troqueer.

Aine’s step-dad Keith Brown said: “She’s made a remarkable recovery. When we took her on a mercy dash to Ark Veterinary Services in Lockerbie on the night it happened and we just didn’t know what would happen.

“They have been absolutely brilliant with her.

“Roxy was rescued two years ago and Aine was struggling with depression and anxiety. But Roxy has helped her turn her life around.

“She’s had a big week but she’s so resilient and settling in. Roxy has a squeaky toy and normally we’d ban it in the car but on the way home from the vets we were so glad to hear it.”
