A Dumfries dog battling meningitis has returned home to continue her recovery.
Labrador spaniel cross Ruby started to shy away from noise and light in August before developing a head tilt and becoming aggressive towards people.
After five days in the vets the 10-month-old was then rushed to the Small Animal Hospital in Glasgow which confirmed the infection and she was put on chemotherapy.
Owner Nadine Wilson said: “Ruby wasn’t right for two or three days.
“We woke up on Sunday and she was a totally different dog. She didn’t like noise or light. We took her to the vets and they put her straight onto antibiotics, steroids and fluids.
“Then on Monday she was growling at everybody and she just wasn’t right and she developed a head tilt.
“On Friday she was rushed to the Small Animal Hospital in Glasgow and had an MRI scan and later that night they confirmed she had meningitis. It wasn’t something I had heard about dogs getting, it was scary.”
After two rounds of chemotherapy, a lot of rest and visits from the family, Ruby returned home to Dumfries on Saturday to continue her recovery.
Nadine, 42, said: “Ruby is doing okay now. She was due to go back to Glasgow on Wednesday but they’re happy with her recovery. She’s booked in for her next chemotherapy for September 6.
“She’s still got limited sight and hearing on her right side but she’s managing to walk unaided. She’s still a bit wobbly but she’s much better. When she was first handed over to us last week she needed two people to help her walk.”
Multiple fundraisers have taken place to help pay for Ruby’s treatment. Despite being insured for up to £4,000 the bill so far is nearly £7,000 before chemotherapy.
Sweet Angels in Dumfries held a raffle and 4Paws dog play and exercise area in Carrutherstown held a Spaniel Day on Sunday which raised more than £450.
A GoFundMe page has also been set up.
Nadine added: “The GoFundMe has been amazing and it’s just snowballed from there.
“The fundraisers have been fantastic and we really appreciate everyone who has donated.”
