Dumfries couple mark 60th wedding anniversary with double celebration

Childhood sweethearts Marion and Harry Green were finally able to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary at the weekend.

And it coincided with Marion’s 81st birthday.

The coronavirus pandemic meant the couple, who live in Cardoness Street, Dumfries had to cancel a family party organised for April.

And they managed to get together with a few family members on Friday – just days before the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon reintroduced Covid restrictions.

They couple were thrilled to see family members and cut into a special 60th anniversary and birthday cake, sharing memories of meeting when Marion (nee: Roan) and Harry, now aged 82, first met as 12 and 13-years-old in the village of Mouswald.

Harry joined the Royal Navy when he was 16 and Marion went on to work for the Forestry Commission.

They married on April 2, 1960 at St Michael’s Church in Dumfries.

Harry worked for Dumfries Fire Brigade for 30 years and Marion was employed at Arthur Jardines in the town.

Their daughter, Morag Moore, said: “We did ask my Dad what the secret to 60 years of marriage was and, in true Harry fashion, he said ‘just not to listen’.”

As well as Morag, who is married to Rob, they have sons John and Brian and daughters-in-law Helen and Allison.

They also have three grandsons: Scott and wife Carly, Christopher and his partner Bernadette, and Jamie.

And the couple also have a great-granddaughter, Sophia, in Oxford who they haven’t yet met due to the pandemic.
