Volunteers at a Dumfries-based humanitarian charity are preparing to welcome the imminent arrival of the first Afghan family seeking refuge in the region.
Massive Outpouring of Love – known as MOOL – has been working with Dumfries and Galloway Council and a housing association to help up to four families who have been forced to flee Afghanistan.
The small charity, which helps refugees at home and abroad, has already had the experience during the past five years of welcoming and supporting 20 families who escaped the Syrian conflict – helping them initially with what they need for homes and then continuing to befriend and assist with resettlement and a new life in Dumfries and Galloway.
It has also helped refugees at Calais and beyond.
MOOL chairman, David Formstone, said all of its volunteers have been working hard to get a house kitted out with furniture and essentials for the first family who are “expected shortly” and will be followed by more.
He said: “Our band of volunteers are absolutely fantastic. They have a lot of experience of going the extra mile to make toys for the children and make a house as homely as possible.”
The charity is receiving some funding from the Home Office through Dumfries and Galloway Council to help them meet the immediate needs of the families but is appealing for people in the region to dig deep and make a donation towards its work with the families.
