Dumfries care home staff go extra mile to take residents on VE Day trip down Memory Lane

Staff at Allanbank Care Home in Dumfries went the extra mile on Friday to take their elderly residents on a trip down Memory Lane.

They dressed up 1940s style for the day-long commemoration of the 75th anniversary of VE Day and served up a feast of fun, food, and music for the 67 residents outside on the car park so they could observe social distancing.

The outdoor picnic was carefully made by the cooks so that it kept within rationing and what was available at that time. They had sandwiches or pieces with either corned beef or spam on, or – as it is Dumfries – salmon as it would have been available from the Nith to boost rations.

They also tucked into egg-less cakes, fruit cakes and rhubarb tarts.

The VE day outdoor street party was the finale to a busy week as staff had created areas within the building on Bankend Road into wartime “rooms” depicting shops and homes as they would have looked in wartime in 1945.

It gave residents the chance to share wartime memories.
