Dumfries branch of The Range lodges bid to sell food and drink

The Range has lodged plans with the council to sell food and drink from its store in Dumfries.

An application to the local authority has shown the retailer is aiming to create a new section which will also include alcohol.

The £300,000 investment in the unit would create between four and six jobs if it is approved.

Plans state the firm wants to use up to 250sq m of the existing site to provide the goods.

MWA Planning Consultancy has written to the council outlining the plans for the store.

It said: “The Range is introducing a limited amount of food and drink goods for consumption off the premises.

“The area used for the sale of food will be comprised of the following main elements: freezer cabinets, two chiller cabinets selling a limited range of perishable items including cheese, meat and dairy products.

“It will also sell a range of ambient, non-perishable tinned and packet goods and a small selection of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages.”

MWA also add that the company has made a “substantial financial investment in refurbishing and refitting” the current store which has had a positive impact on retail in Dumfries.

In the last 12 months The Range has been submitting similar planning applications for their stores across the UK.

According to documents, a limited range of household goods such as soap, toilet rolls, toothpaste, and similar products will also be sold in the same area.

The newly designed space offering the food and drinks will represent around 12.5 per cent of the gross floor area of the store which comprises 2,787 square metres, including the garden centre.

Neighbouring businesses have been notified.
