Dumfries band The Lutras celebrate top 10 chart success

A Dumfries band was rubbing shoulders with Miley Cyrus and Harry Styles at the weekend.

The Lutras launched their charity song Give It All Up For Christmas last week and thanks to a social media campaign it soared into the top 10 in the UK iTunes chart.

The track, which will see proceeds split between the Music Venue Trust and Shelter, peaked at number nine over the weekend. It was up against tracks by artists including Little Mix, Britney Spears and Becky Hill.

Thomas Gillan from the band said: “We woke up on Friday morning and saw people putting it all over Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – basically all over social media.

“Our aim was to get as many downloads and try and get into the charts because that meant more money for both charities. But we didn’t think it would reach number nine it was incredible.

“We were talking in a group chat and couldn’t believe it when we passed Miley Cyrus and Harry Styles. It was all just quite mad.

“People can still keep downloading on iTunes and Bandcamp.”

More than 40 musicians and artists collaborated on the track including Edinburgh’s Phoenix Choir.

The Music Venue Trust aims to protect, secure and improve grassroots music venues which have been hit hard by the pandemic.

Shelter is a registered charity that campaigns to end homelessness and bad housing in the UK.

The Lutras will fundraise through a stripped back set for followers on Facebook and Instagram which goes live at 7pm on Sunday, December 20.
