Dumfries and Galloway Wheelchair Track Athletics Club celebrates rebuild with open day and hog roast

A hog roast BBQ and come and try day was held at the David Keswick Centre in sizzling sunshine on Saturday.

It marked the “rebuild” of the Dumfries and Galloway Wheelchair Track Athletics Club which lost all of its specialist equipment when its storage container was set on fire earlier this year.

The event was in partnership with Spinal Injury Scotland and there were representatives from Motability, Disability Motor Sport, D&G Blood Bikes, Dumfries Fire Station and more for the public to enjoy, as well as trying out the new equipment which has been funded by more than £40,000 in public donations since the fire.

The club is supported by The Greystone Rovers Foundation and the racing and custom-built wheelchairs were on display.

Disabled children and young people in the south of Scotland and north England are club members and he opportunity for them to take up athletics was founded by Johnstonebridge’s 23-year-old champion wheelchair racer Shelby Watson – a nine-times world record holder – and her dad Russ, who is head coach and chairman.

A statement from the club said: “We would like thank everyone for coming along to our event on Saturday. It was amazing to pass on our thanks and appreciation to the community and to the local businesses involved in helping us rebuild our beloved club. And, it was fantastic to have hopefully have gained a few more members.”
