Dumfries and Galloway to stay in lockdown until at least the end of February

Dumfries and Galloway will remain in lockdown until at least the end of February.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has extended the existing restrictions - due to run out in the middle of the month - for another fortnight.

It means pubs and restaurants will remain shut along with non-essential shops, while people can still only meet one other person from one other household.

But the phased return of children to school will begin on February 22.

That day, early learning and childcare will resume and pupils in primaries one to three will return full-time.

There will also be a part-time return for a limited number of senior pupils to do necessary coursework.

Ms Sturgeon said the figures are still "too high", although they showed "real progress" and that lockdown measures are working.

If figures continue to fall, restrictions may begin being eased at the start of March, with an update on that possibility due in a fortnight.

The latest figures show a further 16 positive tests in Dumfries and Galloway, taking the overall total to 3,695. Of those, 1,990 cases have been in 2021.

There are currently 61 - people in hospital - down three from yesterday - with six in intensive care, compared to 11 on Monday.

Across Scotland, a further 758 people tested positive, with the overall figure now at 181,291.

1,939 people are in hospital with 143 in intensive care.

A further 69 people have passed away, with the national death toll now at 6,181.
