Dumfries and Galloway's recycling centres to open fully by end of June

Household waste recycling centres will be fully operational by the end of the month, the News can reveal.

And the council intends to publish details on restoring the service by tomorrow.

The Covid-19 lockdown has meant frustration for residents who have been unable to recycle anything since March.

Most centres reopened on June 1 – but for bagged household waste only.

Now recycling materials such as glass, cardboard and plastic is set to get back under way.

A council spokesperson said: “By the end of this week we would hope to be in a position to announce our way forward in terms of rolling out a full recycling service once again at all our household waste recycling centres.

“This new system will be in place later this month.

“We appreciate the patience and co-operation shown from the public as we continue to deliver vital services in these unprecedented times.”

Dee and Glenkens councillor Dougie Campbell, who is the council’s environment champion, welcomed the move.

He told the News: “I’m pleased that the council are now actively planning to extend current arrangements to allow people to take recyclable materials to our local centres.

“It’s very important that people check for new arrangements before travelling to their local centre and keep an eye on the council website, Twitter and Facebook page for updates on these new arrangements.”

He added: “Over the last couple of months household waste and recyclables has continued to pile up.

“So I understand the frustration people have been feeling about the current arrangements at our household waste and recycling centres.

“However, these arrangements have been in compliance with Scottish Government guidance to protect the safety of both the public and council staff during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It’s clear now that the virus is on the retreat because the vast majority of people have followed restrictions and guidance issued by the Scottish Government.”

Information on the return of a full recycling service will be available on the council’s dedicated website supportdg.dumgal.gov.uk/waste and social media channels.
