Dumfries and Galloway residents to be allowed to travel across Scotland from Friday, April 16

People in Dumfries and Galloway will be able to see friends and family in other parts of Scotland from Friday.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has just announced plans to relax some of the coronavirus travel restrictions earlier than planned.

It means people will be allowed to travel outwith their local authority area for non-essential reasons for the first time this year.

Up to six people from six different households will be allowed to meet up in an outdoor area.

The change had been due to come into effect on April 26 but has been brought forward due to the continuing drop in coronavirus restrictions

April 26 will see the country move from level four of lockdown - which it has been in since Boxing Day - and drop to level three.

The First Minister said: “We are now extremely confident that those parts of the country currently in Level 4 will move to Level 3 on April 26, that’s now less that two weeks away.

“That means, amongst other things, that on that day shops will fully reopen, pubs, cafes and restaurants will also be able to fully open outdoors on April 26 and will be able to open indoors on that date, but on a restricted basis.”

Although cross-border travel is still banned, it is expected to be allowed from April 26.

The plan is for the country to move to level two on May 17, meaning small groups of people will be allowed to meet up indoors.
