Dumfries and Galloway Radio Unit looking forward to getting back in action

A group of volunteers which provides crowd safety at events is looking forward to getting back in action.

Dumfries and Galloway Radio Unit assist large events such as Dumfries Show and various Riding of the Marches with crowd and traffic management.

However, due to the coronavirus crisis they have had to hang up the radios as the pandemic has cancelled all large gatherings.

Alister Kerr, the public duty officer for the group, said: “We’ve had nothing in this last year. It’s been quite dull.

“We’re looking forward to getting back to doing what we enjoy. Thank goodness we’re getting back to some kind of normality. We enjoy going to events and seeing people and talking to them.”

Now things are getting better and some events, such as the Kirkcudbright Country Fair, are coming back the group is appealing for more volunteers.

Alister, 58, said: “There’s 11 of us and some come from as far as Annan but we’re looking for more volunteers so we can cover larger events.

“We’ve got the Kirkcudbright Country Fair in July but really we think we will be waiting until next year until most things have returned.

“It’s quite a serious role but it’s also very enjoyable. Every year we have a Christmas dinner too so there is a social side to things as well.

“The group has been going for about 12 years. I used to be in the Red Cross for a few years and we used a ham radio and that’s how I got into it.”

Anyone interested in joining is asked to contact the group by emailing dgru456@gmail.com or by contacting Alister on 07746 001611.
