Dumfries and Galloway joiner transforms woodlands for new BBC series

A Holywood joiner and furniture manufacturer transformed the Scottish woodlands in the new BBC Scotland series Loggerheads.

Jack Hastings appeared in the eight episodes where two teams had 24 hours to craft and create something from their freshly felled timber.

Both teams travelled from Gillies Hill in Stirlingshire to the shores of Loch Goil in Argyll to create a boat inspired picnic table, play fort, sewing seat and more.

Jack, 28, along with his team leader Linzi St Clair Thompson and other members, competed for a victory to lift the golden axe.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Loggerheads series was only filmed last year.

Jack was surprised when he was invited to the show three years ago. He said: “I have never done anything like this before.

“Everything is created by the machinery nowadays and we do not have to do much work with the tools so it was a good challenge for me and the team.”

Jack believes the series allowed the teams to help create projects that will benefit visitors and the local communities across Scotland. He said: “The group of people who worked on this were easy to get along with and everyone helped each other to achieve this.”

Jack is the third generation in his family business and works for Hastings Bespoke Ltd where he uses his talents to create bespoke doors, windows and mouldings.

The series is still available to watch on BBC iPayer.
