Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership delivers more than 70 food parcels during first week of new service

More than 70 food parcels were delivered across the region in the first week of a new EatWell service by social landlord, Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership (DGHP).

They were taken to families across the region who are struggling financially or who are self-isolating and have fed more than 150 people.

DGHP is part of Wheatley Group who have been delivering emergency food parcels to vulnerable tenants around Scotland.

A total of 1,600 parcels have been delivered across Dumfries and Galloway and Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Lothians, so far.

Wheatley has plans to inject a further £350,000 into the service and to mobilise even more staff and vehicles to support the huge expansion of the emergency service.

As well as food to last a family a week, the deliveries by EatWell staff and colleagues drafted in from other Wheatley services, also contain essential household items such as toilet rolls.

Wheatley Foundation director Lorraine McLaren said: “We’re doing all we can to support our most vulnerable customers during these very difficult times.

"EatWell is a lifeline service to people in financial hardship who are ill or self-isolating and feel they have no-one else to turn to for support.”

The group, which aims to boost deliveries to 1,500 a week, is calling on customers in need to contact their housing officers and support staff if they need help.
