Dumfries and Galloway health chiefs say region's biggest ever flu vaccination campaign going to schedule

The biggest ever flu vaccination campaign ever undertaken within Dumfries and Galloway is progressing on schedule.

Almost two-thirds of the region’s population will be offered a free jab against the bug.

Letters providing dates and locations to receive a scheduled vaccination are still going out in batches, in line with the planned programme.

Dr Nigel Calvert is a consultant in Public Health Medicine and he said: “I’m pleased to say that the biggest ever flu vaccination campaign that’s been undertaken in Dumfries and Galloway is progressing on schedule.

“Eight teams are continuing to work through a schedule of rotating locations to deliver vaccinations.

“Just under 100,000 people are eligible to receive a flu vaccination and the scale of this together with the ongoing issue of Covid has led to this approach. We have had a number of people getting in touch to say that they haven’t yet received their letter.

“We would like to offer an assurance that everyone who is eligible to receive a flu vaccination will receive a letter setting out details of their appointment. This letter will arrive in good time ahead of the appointment and with an opportunity at that point for people to get in touch.”

In line with Scottish Government directions, the flu vaccination programme is taking place over a 12 week period, concluding December 31.

Delivery to pre-school children and primary school children is on schedule and being delivered without any issue.

For adults, the priority is to deliver first to the over 65 year age group, many of whom will have multiple “at-risk” medical conditions that accompany increasing age.

The programmes is now at week four and it is expected that all participating over 65s will receive their vaccinations within the next four weeks.

The under 65s with at-risk medical conditions will follow and many will be receiving their letters shortly.
