Dumfries and Galloway curlers crowned Men's World Champions

Dumfries and Galloway’s curlers are on top of the world.

Kirkgunzeon’s Grant Hardie and the Stranraer pair of Hammy McMillan and Bobby Lammie, as well as skip Bruce Mouat, have been crowned World Men’s Curling Champions.

They defeated hosts Canada 9-3 in Sunday’s final in Ottawa, giving them a gold medal to add to last year’s European Curling Championships and the silver medal they won at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The Scottish rink had needed an extra end to defeat Italy in Saturday’s semi-final but things were different in the final.

After three ends they were 4-0 ahead and while the Canadian’s took a point in the fourth end, Scotland scored two in the fifth to enjoy a 6-1 advantage.

Canada then scored two points themselves to bring things back to 6-3 but that was as close as they would get, Scotland scoring three in the eighth end to force the hosts to concede.

Mouat said: “I didn’t expect the final to go that way but I’m so proud of everyone that’s been a part of our team and even everyone back home.

“I’m just over the moon.”
