Dumfries and Galloway councillor named Scotland's best new councillor

A Dumfries and Galloway councillor has scooped a national award at a glittering ceremony in Glasgow.

Jackie McCamon was announced as LGIU Scotland’s New Councillor of the Year 2021 in the City Chambers.

Councillor McCamon was elected to represent Mid Galloway and Wigtown West in January, 2020.

She won the honour for her “enthusiastic representation of her constituents and driving forward community agendas”.

Jackie said: “I’m so very honoured to have received the New Councillor of the Year Award. I was delighted to learn I had been shortlisted and I am absolutely elated to have won.

“It is a great privilege to represent the people of Wigtownshire, my home, and I hope I can continue to do so for a long time to come.”

The annual councillor awards, now in their fourth year, celebrate the best democracy in action.

Close to 100 nominations were received across all categories.

The winners were selected by a group of judges including senior councillors and leading stakeholders from across the sector.
