Dumfries and Galloway Council officials set to hit the road to talk about new waste collection system

Council officials will hit the road to tell people about the new £23 million household waste collection system.

A series of community conversations will be held across the region, giving people the chance to find out more about the scheme that will start being introduced next year.

The council will spend £8.2 million on 31 new lorries, 150,000 wheelie bins and various community collection sites for the new system.

A further £13.2 million will be spent on a Dumfries Zero Waste Park, with £2.8 million for the “rectification” required to some assets following the termination of the private finance initiative (PFI) waste contract with Renewi last year.

The first meeting will be held at the council offices in Kirkcudbright’s Daar Road on October 29.

There will be similar events in Castle Douglas Town Hall on November 11 and Dalbeattie Town Hall on November 12.

The new bins will be on display and there will also be information about the types of materials that can be recycled.

The report states there will also be information about road end bin collections, tagging domestic wheelie bins and the removal of unauthorised bins.

It says tagging bins is needed to let householders know of concerns “with types or volumes of materials presented and provide reasons why the waste has not been lifted”.

And it adds that the removal of unauthorised second wheelie bins was due to begin this week but won’t affect people who have “approved additional residual waste capacity”.

Communities committee chairman, Andy Ferguson, said: “I would encourage everyone to come along to one of the drop-in sessions to hear more about the service and to give us your views on how we tackle the huge problem of reducing waste together.”
