More than 87 tonnes of recyclable material has been picked up in the Stewartry since a new collection service was rolled out in April.
Councillors on the ad hoc waste collection, treatment and disposal sub committee today will discuss the rollout of the new programme which has been called a “success”.
James McLeod, the council’s infrastructure manager, will tell members: “The general response from householders has been extremely positive with quantities of recycling being high and issues with contamination being relatively minor in comparison with numbers of uplifts.
“In the first two weeks of the rollout in Nithsdale more than 22 tonnes of plastics, metals and cartons were collected. “
Stewartry area service saw more than 64 tonnes of paper and cardboard and 23 tonnes of plastic, metals and cartons collected.”
The council does admit there are some issues to fix and there are still some “mopping-up operations” to undertake. They include the replacement of standard 240 litre bins with 140 litre bins in some locations and the installation of bins in communal facilities where individual bins aren’t appropriate.
Members will also be told the next service to be rolled out will be the weekly food waste collection which will be provided in Dalbeattie.
The advantages of using a booking system for household waste recycling centres will also be discussed by councillors.
Councillors were asked to note the items at today’s meeting.
