Dumfries and Galloway coronavirus figures for Tuesday, January 12

A further 71 people in Dumfries and Galloway have tested positive for coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

It takes the number since 2021 began to 1,150, with the total for the pandemic now at 2,855.

There are now 48 people in hospital, compared to 45 yesterday. 12 are in intensive care, as opposed to 11 yesterday.

There were a further 1,875 cases in Scotland today, taking the total to 153,423.

A further 53 patients are in hospital, taking the figure to 1,717. Seven more people are in intensive care, taking that tally to 133.

Sadly, a further 54 people have died, pushing the total to 5,023.

During today's briefing, Scotland's clinical director Jason Leitch said what had happened in Dumfries and Galloway was "an example" of the challenge coronavirus presents.

He said: "Dumfries and Galloway went from almost no cases to the highest in the country in three weeks - that is the nature of this virus.

"People should be cautious in Dumfries and Galloway, but they shouldn't be scared, the hospital both has its own capacity and we have mutual aid across the whole country."
