Dumfries and Galloway coronavirus figures for September 28

There was a significant increase in the number of positive coronavirus cases over the weekend.

There were nine new cases in Dumfries and Galloway on both Saturday and Sunday, with a further three of cases confirmed on Monday.

That has seen the total in the region since the pandemic began rise to 391, with 78 having been confirmed since the start of September.

Across Scotland, a further 222 positive cases were revealed on Monday, although First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warned the number is lower than expected due to the “weekend effect”.

That increase takes the number across Scotland since the start of the outbreak to 27,798.

There are currently 122 people in hospital with 16 in intensive care.

The weekend was the first since new measures were introduced across the country, with people not allowed to meet other households in private properties and pubs and restaurants told to close at 10pm each night.

There are also guidelines in place for students after hundreds tested positive for the virus and more were told to self-isolate in halls of residents.

New guidance allows students to return home to their families but they most do permanently, with other residents also having to go into quarantine for 14 days.

Shorter visits are allowed for reasons such as a bereavement or family emergency, but if no such reason exists that will be classed as an “offence”.

Education Minister Richard Lochhead says he does not expect a “mass exodus” of students returning home following the new guidance.
