Dumfries and Galloway commuters face month of chaos due to work to repair railway landslip

Commuters face chaos for up to a month as work to repair a railway landslip continues.

Rail chiefs have confirmed there will be a further four weeks of work following the collapse of an embankment between Thornhill and Holywood.

The landslip happened in the aftermath of Storm Ciara when the rising River Nith caused soil erosion on February 10.

It forced the termination of rail services between Kilmarnock and Dumfries.

Engineers were drafted in to examine the site following the landslide.

A repair operation is under way on a 50 metre stretch of the line, following the 1700 ton slip.

But the repair bid was hindered by the fact that specialists were forced to construct a new road to access the damaged stretch, as well as creating a compound for works material to access the site before they could begin the process of reconstructing the embankment.

Services on the line between Dumfries and Carlisle and Kilmarnock and Glasgow, will continue to be replaced by buses on the affected stretch.

A spokesman for Network Rail, said: “Our engineers are working hard to reopen the line as quickly as possible for customers.

“Storm Ciara has caused significant damage beneath the track and we will need to rebuild the track-bed and supporting embankment before we can reopen the line.”

He added: “The landslip is located in a challenging location above the river and will also require our engineers to construct a haul road to bring equipment and materials to the site.”

Passengers with tickets for ScotRail services can travel on Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express services from Carlisle and Glasgow Central, via Lockerbie, meantime.

It is expected that the line will be reopened on Monday March 16.
