Dumfries and Galloway children set to begin returning to school on February 22

The region’s children will begin going back to school next week.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed that youngsters will return to classes on Monday.

Schools have been shut since Christmas after the country returned to lockdown due to an increase in the number of coronavirus cases.

But from Monday, pupils in primaries one, two and three will be back in classes.

There will also be a partial return for pupils in S4, S5 and S6 who need to be in school to carry out practical work necessary for the completion of national qualification courses.

Ms Sturgeon said: We will need to monitor the impact of this change very carefully before taking any further decisions. However, I hope we will be able to set out the second phase of school re-opening in two weeks’ time."

She added it was unlikely there would be any further return to schools before March 15.

The First Minister also confirmed that other lockdown restrictions will remain in place for at least the rest of February as "even a slight" easing of them could lead to an increase in cases.

It is hoped to published a framework for exiting lockdown next week, but Ms Sturgeon warned: "If we open up too quickly to meet arbitrary dates, we do risk setting our progress back."

Dumfries and Galloway’s education director Dr Gillian Brydson contacted parents last week to tell parents what would be happening of the reopening was confirmed.

Free school meals will be provided to all primary one, two and three pupils.

And she said the Scottish Government is introducing a Covid-19 asymptomatic testing programme for “all members of our wider school staff” and for “senior phase pupils who will be attending school”.

Dr Brydson also revealed that schools will continue – after this week’s half-term break – to provide critical childcare to help key workers.

There were 15 new Covid cases confirmed in the region today, taking the overall total to 3,929.

There are 26 people in hospital and six in intensive care.
