Dumfries and Galloway bracing itself for heavy snow as amber weather warning issued

Dumfries and Galloway is bracing itself for heavy snow fall tonight.

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for snow for large parts of the region until 9pm tonight.

And that comes on top of yellow warnings for wind, snow and ice that were already in place.

Motorists are being warned to expect delays with the possibility of vehicles being stranded where snowfall is heaviest. Tran services are also likely to be affected.

And there’s a good chance that rural communities could be cut off and areas could experience powercuts.

The council has activated the DGVost (Dumfries and Galloway Virtual Operations Support Team) and will have council gritters out and about, with routes about 100 metres coming in for particular attention.

In addition to the amber warning, there is a yellow weather warning in effect for snow and wind until midnight.

That will then be replaced with a yellow warning for snow and ice until 12noon tomorrow, which could cause havoc at rush hour.

The region is still covering from the after effects of Storm Ciara at the weekend which saw flooding across Dumfries and Galloway, including the Whitesands in Dumfries.

On Tuesday, police issued another flood warning for the area, asking everyone to remove their vehicles from the car parks.

And the bad weather is set to continue, with another weather warning for heavy rain in effect on Friday before the country braces itself for Storm Dennis on Saturday.
