Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes handed £8,500 towards running costs by Scotmid Co-operative

Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes charity has been handed £8,500 towards running costs.

The cash boost came from the Scotmid Co-operative’s Community Connect award scheme and the funding will used to maintain the bikes and cars.

Blood Bikes were awarded funding after being shortlisted by the convenience retailer as one of three causes and charities in West of Scotland region to receive financial support from an £84,000 pot.

Judith Sauberlich, chairperson at Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes – whose volunteers deliver essential blood and urgent medical supplies around the region – said: “Like all the other charities we’ve not been able to go out and about doing our usual fundraising.”

In normal times, Scotmid would typically select a shortlist of community projects which its members then vote on to allocate different amounts of funding. However, due to the pandemic, the Scotmid Board agreed that all shortlisted charities and community groups would receive equal amounts of funding within each region.

Andy Simm, chairman of the West Regional Committee of Scotmid, said: “The pandemic has created numerous challenges for communities to overcome and adapt to.

“Community Connect is one of the main ways we can support the communities that we serve and we are delighted to provide Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes with funding as they continues to provide vital support to the community.”
