Dumfries and Galloway bin conditions disrupted by freezing temperatures and icy roads

Freezing temperatures and icy roads have disrupted bin collections across the region.

Waste lorries had to detour round some routes due to conditions.

Dumfries and Galloway Council blamed “adverse weather conditions” for the missed collections.

The council said there had been “some issues” and “due to road conditions some routes have not been completed in the last few days”.

It advised people to check its website – at https://crowd.in/7F6OmJ – for advice on what to do with waste until the next visit and when it would be picked up.

Households were told they could leave up to three bags of side waste near their bin.

Some areas were offered a collection this week, but others will have to wait until their regular collection day comes around.

However, residents posted comments on the council’s Facebook page to complain that they too had not had their bins emptied but aren’t included on the list.

Joanne Harris said: “We’ve had this issue two weeks in a row, no mention of an extra collection above. Do we just keep adding bags?”

Margaret Brown said: “This despite the fact that our private road had been gritted and was ice free.”

While Jill Walpole-Pender posed the question: “Funny how we can get from Rockcliffe 21 miles into Dumfries for work but the bin lorry can’t get out here?”

Others criticised the authority for blaming icy roads.

Stuart Walker asked: “Are the council not in charge of gritting the roads as well?”

Lynn Mckinnell posted: “Why are streets not being gritted for their colleagues so they can do their job?”

Among those affected in Dumfriesshire were: Broomfield, Sanquhar; Ellisland Farm; Holywood Fish Farm; Friars Carse; properties near railway line at Holywood; Rae Street, Dumfries; part of The Grove, Dumfries; part of Dalscone Way, Dumfries.

Langholm’s Drove Road and Hall Path; Moffat’s Hillside Terrace, Alton Road, West Park; B7020 Lockwood Mains to Buckrigg, Marchbank Area, Greystonrigg

Beattock; Craigielands; B7076 Annanbank.

Moniaive to Dalwhat farm road, Tynron to Shinnel Glen Road; B729 Moniaive to Casphairn; Corsock to Moniaive road via Glaisters wood; Balgray Hill Farm.
