Dumfries teenager Charlotte Green is using girl power to help change the lives of others less fortunate than herself.
The 16-year-old Dumfries Academy pupil has launched the second Girl Up club in Scotland and is looking for other young feminists to join in her quest to achieve gender equality worldwide.
Founded by the United Nations Foundation in 2010, Girl Up gives girls the resources to start a movement for social change.
Charlotte said: “As a caring person who is passionate about change for girls, I was inspired to start my own club so the adolescents of Dumfries have a chance to help.
“The countries Girl Up currently helps are Liberia, Guatemala, Uganda, Ethiopia, Malawi and India. In these countries they use the funds raised by Girl Up clubs around the world to provide a range of help from bicycles for transport to school or solar lanterns to study at night.
“Hundreds of thousands of girls have been helped so far but there are so many more in desperate need.”
On Monday, which was International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Charlotte’s group hosted a sew-a-thon to make reusable sanitary products assisted by Dumfries charity MOOL which helps refugees in Calais.
Girl Up has also been inspired to help women closer to home. Members are collecting donations until December 29 for gift boxes for breast cancer patients at Dumfries Infirmary.
