Dumbarton wonderkid Callum Wilson felt goal against Falkirk had been coming

Callum Wilson struck a sensational winner against Falkirk, then revealed that he’d been telling his teammates all week it was coming.

The 18-year-old has starred for the Sons since joining the club in the summer, with his first senior goal ensuring Stevie Farrell’s men left Grangemouth with all three points for the first time since 2013.

And the former Hibs kid told the Lennox post-match that he was confident of making an impression on the biggest crowd he’s played in front of.

Wilson said: “When the ball came across I was in two minds. I didn’t know whether to hit it first time or take a touch.

“By that stage I had taken a touch though so my only option was to cut in.

“I scored a goal like that during the week in training, so I believed in myself.

“I knew I could score. I was saying all week that I had my goal in me. I’m quite happy it came. I knew a lot of folk who were watching.

“The crowd was big, you need to prove yourself on the big stage against the best teams. I came here and I wanted to do that, hopefully the goal proves that.”

It marks the latest achievement in a remarkable start to the season for Wilson, who spent 16 months out of football due to lockdown after nine years as a young player with Hibs.

Wilson joined the Sons in July having impressed on trial, with manager Farrell admitting that his pre-season performances had been too good to ignore –and the midfielder is keen to repay his manager’s faith.

He continued: “I need to thank the gaffer. He’s been absolutely brilliant with me. He’s given me a lot of encouragement but he’s also been completely honest with me when I’ve not been good enough as well.

“He’s helped me a lot and that’s something I can’t thank him enough for.”

And with Sons having recorded three straight victories in League One, there is no fear ahead of the visit of Barry Ferguson’s Alloa Athletic this weekend.

Wilson added: “We need to try and target three points every week. There’s no point coming and playing for a draw. We believe in ourselves.”

Farrell, meanwhile, ensured Wilson’s feet remained on the ground.

He joked: “What can you say? The kid is just the kid. I thought performance-wise he was murder. He kept on giving it away. But that’s what he’s capable of.

“He’s absolutely fearless.”
