Dumbarton town centre road to remain closed into next month

Drivers could be left with over a month’s more disruption in Dumbarton as works to the rail bridge over Townend Road could last until May.

National Rail - the body responsible for the refurbishment project - say the works have been extended after the bridge was found to be in a worse condition than surveyors had predicted.

The road, linking Church Street with Townend Road, was closed back in January this year with drivers initially told to expect diversions for up to 10 weeks.

The work is part of a £1.3million project to refurbish bridges at Dumbarton Central Station.

It follows the £2million project in October last year to replace the bridge over Bonhill Road.

The Lennox Herald reported last week how that project had hit by an embarrassing blunder after engineers admitted the bridge had been installed too high.

A source told us it is a “costly nightmare” and warned the road may need to be closed for another weekend for repairs to be carried out.

Network Rail say the works at Townend Road require extra repairs which had not been anticipated.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “The refurbishment work has been extended due to a range of issues, including the need to carry-out additional repairs.

“Some sections of the bridge were found to be in a poorer condition than original surveys suggested, and extra repair work has had to be carried out. We expect the road closure will remain in place until mid-May.”

The spokesman has previously said: “The work we are undertaking is vital to the long-term operation of the railway. We understand the inconvenience the work will cause to some motorists and are committed to completing the project as quickly as possible.”
