Dumbarton town centre: Bid for seagull-proof bins to cut down on waste

A plea has been made to install seagull-proof bins along Dumbarton waterfront to cut down on litter.

Labour councillor David McBride is hoping funding can be made available to install more sufficient waste disposal units to help address the problem.

The councillor raised questions about the issues at a West Dunbartonshire Council committee meeting last week.

He said: “There has been an incredible litter problem in the quay area of Dumbarton.

“If necessary, could the community council work in partnership with the council to make an application to the fund to purchase very expensive but fit for purpose bins in that particular location?”

A council officer confirmed that a third party would have to apply to the Dumbarton Town Centre Common Good Fund.

Michael McGuinness, economic development manager, said: “A member of the community council could apply for some funding.

“We would work with them to see if it was appropriate to release money to provide something more innovative and attractive at the waterfront edge.

“Some bins may not be as seagull-proof as others so we would be very happy to speak to any member of the committee who would seek to apply to the Dumbarton Town Centre Common Good Fund to provide those facilities.”
