Dumbarton special constable awarded for volunteering 500 hours during pandemic

A special constable from Dumbarton has been recognised for 500 hours of tireless working during the pandemic.

Since April, SPC Lee McWhinney, who has been volunteering since last autumn, has racked up the total working on the frontline of policing in Dumbarton and the Vale during the pandemic - and he’s relished the experience.

SPC McWhinney said: “I have been a special constable since September last year and have really enjoyed it. After a period of training I was able to join regular colleagues on patrol and have been involved in a wide variety of policing activities.

“I would thoroughly recommend becoming a special constable, it has given me an excellent insight into the role of a police officer and I am hoping to become a regular officer at some point soon.”

Area commander, Chief Inspector Scott Carlin, who presented Lee with the certificate has paid tribute to his work.

He added: “We are delighted to recognise Special Constable Lee McWhinney’s commitment to serving the people of West Dunbartonshire during these unprecedented times.

“Lee willingly stepped forward and has completed a very impressive 500 hours of volunteering.

“Lee is working on the frontline with regular colleagues in Response and Community Policing and is a popular and highly valued member of our police team.

“It is great to be able to recognise his commitment and enthusiasm for the role and to thank him for his contribution.”
