Dumbarton schoolgirl fills the shoes of Ariana Grande on stage

A talented 12-year-old will take to the stage later this month for her latest musical role — filling the shoes of Ariana Grande.

Jessica Smith from Dumbarton will perform in the coming-of-age musical ‘13’ at the Webster’s Theatre in Glasgow later this month as part of the Stellar Musical Theatre Company.

The show depicts the trials and tribulations of entering the teenage years, following the group of characters through the complicated world of friendships, dating and growing up.

P7 pupil Jessica will take on the role of Charlotte — originally played by pop-sensation Grande, who made her Broadway debut in the musical back in 2008.

“She is delighted,” said proud mum Margaret.

“The show has been double cast and she will play Charlotte for two of the performances, the other two nights she will be in the ensemble.

“She has been chuffed to bits and loves the fact that the role was originally Ariana Grande’s. That’s how she made her name.”

We previously reported this year how Jessica was one of three youngsters from Dumbarton and the Vale to take part in a star-studded show in Glasgow, Movies to Musicals.

Along with Callum Latham and Mark Morrison, Jessica performed at the prestigious Royal Concert Hall alongside West End stars Lucy Kay, Kerry Ellis and John Owen Jones.

“She just loves performing,” said Margaret. “She loves the rehearsals and the production side of things too as well as the singing, dancing and acting.”

However, Jessica is not only a talent on the stage.

The St Patrick’s Primary pupil is also a football player for Dumbarton United’s under-13 girls and hopes to continue both her love for sports and performance when she goes to Our Lady and St Patrick’s High School later this year.
