Dumbarton pub given permission to stay open later as it recovers from pandemic

A popular town centre pub in Dumbarton has been allowed to stay open until 2am at weekends as it recovers from the pandemic.

The Burgh Bar asked West Dunbartonshire Council if it could close its lounge area an hour later on Fridays and Saturdays in a bid to grow its night-time entertainment.

At a licensing meeting last week, it was heard the bid was an hour over policy rules. But the majority of councillors were satisfied the premises was well managed and could operate safely with the extra hour.

The approval comes two years after the pub was knocked back for a similar application amid fears it would cause a booze price war and lead the way for others to try and extend their hours.

The High Street pub is operated by David and Anne-Marie Woodcock on behalf of Punch Pubs.

Michael McDougall, representing the pub, said the extension would help grow its entertainment offering as it recovers from the pandemic.

He said: “The hospitality industry has been decimated by the pandemic. The Burgh Bar has had an incredibly difficult 18 months.

“They are trying to get back on their feet and part of that has been growing the entertainment offering.

“David took over the premises in 2017. I’m told the premises were quite difficult back then but have been transformed.

“They are pretty much the busiest premises in Dumbarton and have an excellent relationship with licensing standards.

“They cater to an older, more mature demographic.

“They offer good quality entertainment with a singer and I’m told there’s nothing like it in Dumbarton.

“Many had asked for the entertainment to be on a wee bit longer.

“The lounge has its own entrance from the street and there will be no further entry after midnight.”

Chris Rafferty, of Punch Pubs, which applied for the new licence, said the firm had invested £150,000 in the bar, saying: “David has shown time and time again that he can deliver a safe and legal environment.”

Council leader Jonathan McColl moved to approve the bid, saying: “I consider the location to be suitable.

“This is a well-run premises.”

However, Conservative councillor Brian Walker said: “I’ve got a different opinion. The application does not meet the requirements of the policy.”

The leader’s motion went through by three votes to two.

As part of the conditions, the 2am closing time will apply only to the lounge area at weekends during ticketed events.
