Dumbarton police warn residents about the danger of doorstep scammers

Police are holding a roadshow in Dumbarton today (Wednesday) to warn householders not to become a victim of bogus callers.

Hundreds of thousands of pounds are lost every year across the country to doorstep scams and local officers want to make sure people here don’t fall foul.

The Shut Out Scammers stall will be at the West Dunbartonshire Council offices at Church Street in Dumbarton today between 10am and 2pm with information available on how householders can protect themselves from fraudsters.

PC Dale Logsdon of the preventions and interventions team at Dumbarton police office said: “Doorstep crime affects people in all parts of our communities but can be particularly devastating to the vulnerable.”

The local event comes as part of Police Scotland’s national Shut Out Scammers campaign taking place over the next two weeks.

During the launch of the campaign, Chief Superintendent John McKenzie, who leads Safer Communities, said: “Nobody is immune to this kind of crime. It is incredibly invasive and victims often feel embarrassed about being deceived.

“We take doorstep crime very seriously and understand the significant impact it has on victims.

“It is vital that people report crimes to us when they happen.

“Our Shut Out Scammers campaign will help us stop more members of our communities being targeted by those intent on defrauding them of cash or gaining access to their homes.”
