Dumbarton Pipe Band opening its doors to the next generation

Dumbarton and District Pipe Band are throwing their doors open to young people looking to learn how to play the pipes and drums.

The group currently have spaces available on their juvenile programme for youngsters between the ages of eight and 16, and anyone can come along to their Renton base this Wednesday (January 15) at 7pm.

Former pipe major and now honorary life member Gordon Lawrie explained the positive impact getting involved in the band can have.

He said: “It can have a massive benefit for kids. It’s a lifestyle.

“You develop self-esteem, communication skills, intelligence. It’s a massive technical challenge.

“It’s a life changer in many cases - especially here. We’re in a deprived area and it can really change lives.

“They’re working as a team, meeting new players from right throughout Scotland and then there’s the upholding of the culture.

“We’re tradition bearers and it’s about passing that on.”

Anyone interested in finding out more can contact the band via dumbartonpipeband@yahoo.com or by visiting their hall, the large sandstone building by Renton Station, on Wednesday evening.
