Dumbarton FC distances itself from owners' objection to castle lights

Dumbarton Football Club has distanced itself from an objection made by its owners to illuminate the town’s castle.

We previously reported how club owners Brabco Ltd had submitted a formal letter of objection to plans put forward by West Dunbartonshire Council for seven floodlights at Dumbarton Castle at night.

The club investors submitted the objection jointly under their name and the club itself.

But in a statement last week, the club board insisted they had made no formal response to the application.

Spokesman Simon Barrow said: “We want to make it clear that while an objection to the lighting scheme has been put in by our owners, as is their right, the chairman and club board have made no such formal response and sincerely hope that a solution can be found which protects and furthers everyone’s interests on a mutual basis.

“While we are a part-time club with limited resources, we want to do everything we can to strengthen links with the Dumbarton community of which we are proud to be part.”

Brabco said their rejected bid to relocate to new premises last year made it necessary to introduce non-football revenue generating uses on land around the stadium.

They said the location of the lighting would have to be amended to minimise the effect on the developable area, adding: “It will not be possible for WDC to locate the lighting columns on the DFC land in the locations currently shown.”
