Stevie Farrell believes Sons’ Boxing Day clash with Queen’s Park could be their last match before a ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown is introduced in the lower leagues.
Members of the SFA’s joint-response group on Covid-19 are set to meet for crunch talks this week, after introducing mandatory daily testing for Premiership clubs.
The situation could mirror the one in January 2021 where clubs outwith the top divisions had their seasons put on hold for more than two months due to Covid-19.
It has been reported that sporting events are under consideration for additional curbs ahead of the First Minister giving a statement to Parliament this afternoon.
However Farrell, who saw his side fall to a seventh defeat in 10 outings, is optimistic that any break from the game wouldn’t be as lengthy as last season.
He said: “I’m picking up that Saturday could be our last for a wee while.
“But I don’t know if there’s any truth in that. We’ll just need to wait and see.
“It’s something that’s out of our control.
“There are meetings at the beginning of the week with the governing bodies as I understand it and we’ll just have to wait on the outcome of those.
“I don’t think it’s as bad as it was on 2020 now though.
“I think there may be a circuit breaker. I’m not a government minister so I don’t make these decisions, but I feel like that might be around the corner.
“Because of the boosters and vaccinations being as far on as they are I think we should get back to playing football soon though.
“That’s certainly the hope.”
After facing Queen’s Park on December 26, Airdrieonians are scheduled to be first foots to the Rock on January 2 - with kick off at the earlier time of 1.30pm.
