Dumbarton FC aiming to track down heroes from 1972 title winning squad

Dumbarton Football Club are aiming to trace everyone involved in their Second Division title win of 1971/72.

The Sons are hosting a celebration to mark 50 years since the success in May, but club historian Jim McAllister is keen to ensure all those involved are aware.

Jim explained: “After an absence of 50 years, Dumbarton FC returned to the top flight of Scottish football at the end of the 1971-72 season by winning the Second Division title.

“At the time, it was the club’s first national championship win in 60 years - and for many Sons fans, that era and the players involved remain heroes.”

Five members of the side; Colin McAdam, Kenny Jenkins, Jack Bolton, Charlie Gallacher and Sandy McLaughlin are known to have passed away.

Jim is keen to ensure all members of the 1972 squad are invited. (Daily Record)

Lawrie Williams, Alan Mackay, Johnny Graham, Peter Coleman, Roy McCormack, Kenny Wilson, Brian Gallagher, Davie Wilson, Tom McAdam and physio Bobby Holmes have all be tracked down and will be sent invites - however Jim is still attempting to trace anyone else involved at the time, whose whereabouts remain unknown.

Some, such as Billy Wilkinson and Johnny Paterson, were known to have emigrated to Australia some years ago.

The club would be keen to arrange video messages from any players from the squad living overseas who wouldn’t be able to attend.

The club have still to trace Ian Fearn, Brian Goodwin, Ronnie Kidd, Drummond Mentiply, Bruce Livingstone, Gordon Menzies, Ian Miller, Kenny Morrison and John O’Brien.

If you know a member of the Class of ‘72 who has yet to be invited, email Jim at dumbarton150@gmail.com.
