Dumbarton couple receive official golden congratulations from depute provost daughter

West Dunbartonshire’s depute provost gave her parents a lovely surprise – officially congratulating them on their 50th anniversary.

Karen Conaghan arrived at Ian and Irene Murray’s home to congratulate them on behalf of the council.

She said: “My sisters thought it would be a nice surprise having me turn up in an official capacity to congratulate our parents. They laughed a lot – they really appreciated it.

“We had a big family celebration later that weekend which included their 10 grandchildren, my dad’s two brothers and their wives and my mum’s sister and her husband.

“The only people missing were my dad’s two sisters who live in Toronto. It was a great day.”

Irene, 74, and Ian, 75, celebrated on June 28.

The couple, who live in Dumbarton, got married in 1969 at St Bartholomew’s Church in Glasgow.

Irene is originally from Glasgow, while Ian is from Dumbarton and they decided to move back to the area in 1975. They went on to have four children – three daughters and a son.

Ian is a former West Dunbartonshire councillor, who worked as a building trade manager, charity financial director and ran Langlands newsagent on Dumbarton High Street. Irene was a maths teacher at the Vale of Leven Academy before retiring.
