Dumbarton care workers warned after ignoring patient’s broken leg

Two care home workers have been given warnings after ignoring a patient’s leg pain — which turned out to be a broken bone.

Crosslet Care Home care co-ordinator Margaret Casey and support worker Sheelagh Frame didn’t seek medical help for the individual, according to the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).

The person, known only as AA, told the pair their leg was sore and suddenly needed wheelchair assistance to get to bed, despite usually being mobile.

The SSSC ruled the workers failed to seek medical advice on January 7 last year, which contributed to a delay in treatment.

The panel placed the pair on a six-month warning.

A judgement on the SSSC’s website reads: “Your behaviour amounts to failings in the basic values of the profession. Social service workers must uphold the public trust and confidence in social services and must not place vulnerable service users at an unnecessary risk of harm.”

West Dunbartonshire Council operates the Dumbarton care home.

A spokeswoman said: “West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) expects the highest standards from all staff. We fully support the SSSC investigation and reported outcome.”
