Dumbarton candidate congratulates Labour colleague in making gains on the SNP

Dumbarton hopeful Jackie Baillie has congratulated Labour candidate Douglas McAllister on making gains on the SNP in Clydebank.

Nationalist Marie McNair has secured the seat for Clydebank and Milngavie with 17,787 votes, compared to 12,513 votes for Labour's Douglas McAllister in second place.

There was an incredible 70.8 percent turnout.

Speaking on BBC Scotland, Jackie Baillie, who is battling to retain her Dumbarton seat against the SNP's Toni Giugliano, she said: "It's a great result in Clydebank for Douglas McAllister piling 10 percent onto our share of the vote.

"Congratulations to Douglas and his team on a very good election result."

The figures represent a 9.7 percent increase on the vote from 2016 for Labour and a two percent drop for the SNP.

Pam Gosal of the Conservative and Unionist Party was third with 4153 votes while Katy Gordon of the Lib Dems had 2987 votes. The independent candidate Alexander Robertson polled 220 votes.

Counting for the Dumbarton constituency is expecting to start around 3pm with regional list votes currently being counted.
