Dumbarton cafe marks 40th anniversary with special presentation

A Dumbarton cafe marked its milestone anniversary with a special presentation for their first ever customer.

The Gossip Shop, which is based on Dumbarton High Street, celebrated 40 years of business last week on May 28.

And the family run cafe, which was bought by Mary Baker, 83, and her three daughters - Karen, Marie Jo and Clare - in 1979 , thanked their customers for their loyalty over the years.

One customer in particular, Janet Hughes, remains a loyal customer today, and was presented with a special balloon and flowers by Mary last Wednesday.

Daughter Karen, 58, who took over running the business from mum Mary in 1996, said they have been delighted with the support over the years.

She said: “It has been fantastic. And it was really nice to get Janet down as she was our first ever customer. It was great that my mum remembered and we were able to do it .”

Mum Mary gave up everything to take over the cafe after spending 20 years as an auxiliary nurse.

“We have absolutely loved it,” said Mary, who still goes out at the cafe every day.

“People come to the cafe and they bring their joy and they bring their sadness and we have got to part of it all with so many people.

“It has been wonderful. We are so lucky to still be here after so many years.”
