Dumbarton Accies mark 50 years since Scottish Amateur Cup victory

This Saturday will mark the 50th anniversary of Dumbarton Academy FPs winning the Scottish Amateur Cup.

Robert Chalmers’ side defeated Mearns Amateurs in the final at a busy Boghead Park back in May 1971, with skipper Billy Muir writing himself into Accies folklore when he lifted the most prestigious prize in the amateur game.

The Accies team that day was; Harry Skinner, Buchanan Campbell, Jim Brannan, Scott Lettis, Jim Kennedy, Billy Muir, Bobby Davenport, Jim Leitch, Ian Hulme, Bobby Dowdles, David Brooks and Eddie King.

Covid restrictions have put any plans to mark the anniversary on ice for now however, as Accies’ Robert Porter explained.

He said: “Our plans to celebrate the event have been curbed by the current social distancing measures. Nonetheless, we plan to mark the occasion as best we can at this point, then hold a sportsman’s dinner at a later point when the social distancing restrictions ease.”

Meanwhile, the present day Accies players now have their fixtures confirmed for the return of the grassroots game next month.

Michael Dickie’s men will start their William Turner Challenge Cup campaign with a trip to face league new boys St Joseph’s on Wednesday, May 19, before welcoming Thorn Athletic to Dumbarton on Saturday, May 22.
